Background Check for Pet Adoption?

A few days ago I called Sierra Cares Pet Advocates in California. (Local for me) They rescue animals and find them homes. I requested a dog, and was asked to give the following information: Three personal references to verify that I%26#039;m a good pet owner. My current dog%26#039;s vet. My dog%26#039;s vet history. My dog%26#039;s shot records.

They didn%26#039;t do a credit check, but every day she asks me for something new. I%26#039;ve never BOUGHT a dog, just donated money and adopted one. I%26#039;m so sick of this interrogation, I think I will just go buy one. WHAT IS UP? HAS ANYONE EVER GONE THROUGH ANYTHING LIKE THIS????? P.S. I%26#039;ve adopted from them before!

I volunteer for an organization which rescues dog. The main person that runs it asks for references and performs a home check. The reason she started doing all this is a few years ago she adopted a beautiful shepard out to what seemed like a loving family. Six months later, she happened to drive by the house and the dog was chained outside and in really poor condition. No doubt these new requirements stem from a similar issue.

Don%26#039;t take these processes personally it%26#039;s just to make sure the rescued dog has a forever home as well as alleviate worries of previously heartbroken rescue workers.

However... if the interrogation gets unfriendly, the best thing to do is to politely end contact and adopt a dog elsewhere.

thats becoming pretty comon these days. i tryed to due a adoption from a rott rescue. they wanted to know everthing but my blood type. there just making sure that the dog gets a good home.so you have to understand why they do this. but its odd that they call every day for something new.

You can ask to talk to a different rep. The goal of any rescue is to find forever homes for the dogs in there care, they don%26#039;t want to see them back. %26quot;One by one until there none%26quot;

When you work for this type of thing you see horrible things, have to deal with bad owners, and after awhile some people can become bitter. If you are uncomfortable you could try asking for someone else. She may just be having a bad week.

They also want to make sure that they make the right match, you%26#039;ll probably be asked to bring your current dog to visit potential new ones to see how they get along too.

The reason for vet history, shot records etc is to make sure your dog has received required care, basically making sure the new dog will get it too. Personal references as you know just to make sure the dog won%26#039;t get stuck tied to a chain in the backyard.

Alot of rescues are very thorough these days, they have to be.

If you do decide to buy a dog, go through a reputable breeder, not a pet store, don%26#039;t support the puppy mills.

I know it seems like a lot of probing but it%26#039;s just because so many dogs get abandoned and ill treated these days.

When I first adopted a dog it took over three weeks with home visits and references etc and I joked that I could have got pregnant in that time and nobody would have checked a thing.

It will all seem worth it when you have your new best friend by your side.

I know it is a pain in the.....but, I work in rescue, and have had the heart break. I also work with %26quot;vicious%26quot; breeds. I%26#039;ve been told that adopting a child is easier than getting a dog from me. But if a kid goes out and hurts someone no one talks about banning them........(That%26#039;s a JOKE, btw, got six kids) Some rescues do go overboard, if you find it too intrusive, you can get a dog else where. I know some people feel it is wrong, but the dogs in those %26quot;free to good home%26quot; ads will end up at the shelter if no one takes them. I%26#039;ve also taken free puppies from Wal-mart. That is the hardest one for me to walk by, don%26#039;t know why. Many times there will be vet bills for you, but I still feel like you saved a life. Good luck in your search...I hope the shelter will work out, but if not, there are other ways.

What you are talking about here is common practice among most rescue groups , what they are doing is in no way meant to interrogate you , most of these animals have come from bad situations, they just want to ensure that the animal goes to the best possible home and that they get proper vet care , shot%26#039;s ect.

I am a foster mom for dobermans and the reason this is done .. there are soooo many sick mean ppl out there .. we must make sure our adoptive parents are going to be good ..Its not an itterigation ... And if you arent willing to do what you must to adopt maybe you dont need a dog at all .I have seen soo many dogs go to homes where they have been beaten and abused ..

It is just for the well being of the animal .They must check to make sure you are going to take it to the vet ect ..
