i was stopped for speeding last night and the cop wanted my social security number to check. When he came back to my car he tells me i have two civil judgments in a court from another state i have never lived in.
anyone think this is too much information that some corrupt cops could sell peoples personal information ?

I listen to the police scanner and here in our local county the cops call in name, address, ss#, dob, drivers license number, vehicle information. Anyone could write it down and use that persons information. Do not worry about the officer, worry about the citizens listening in on the police band who you do not know
As to the credit thing.. I have never heard them pull a credit report but each police department may have an internal policy of credit checks for credibility and my guess would be that if you do not pay creditors the chances of you paying a ticket are small and they may arrest and detain you until the ticket is paid ( just a guess )

Having come from a family of police officers and detectives, this is absurd. I would have freaked out on the officer because they have no right or reason to pull a credit check.
Not sure what you can do, as it would likely be his word against yours...and any cop who would run that type of check would deny that they did. Sounds like an intimidation thing.

Cops do not run your credit. They use the social security to protect you from people using your drivers license information if they get stopped. The civil judgements seem a llittle odd that they came up, but if they were entered in the system as not being served to you, it might. As far as your second question, 99.9 percent of the cops out there wont ever sell your information. I cant say everyone because it might happen. There are new law regarding the use of social security number by police. You can always refuse to give it if you have your ID with you. If you dont, then you may be stick having to give it if your driving.

That sounds real suspect! No, they do not run credit checks for speeding! The only think they do is run your plates to see who owns your car, and they run your driver%26#039;s license to see if you have any outstanding tickets or something like that.
I hope you got his badge number - it should be on the ticket. You should contest the ticket and bring this up to the judge in court. Good Luck with this one and I hope you learned your lesson =)

LOL, ridiculous! Your information would be sold by the credit companies before a police officer would!!! Not only that but we do not run credit checks on people when we stop them for speeding, running credit checks requires contacting the three major credit bureau%26#039;s and they would in return have to mail it to us.. This is not a easy process and could take days to accomplish!
My suggestion, Run a credit check and take care of your credit, I find it pretty pathetic that you do not know what is on your credit report but you think a police officer does...

No, we do not. We request the social security number because it has become a pseudo national ID number. Most people don%26#039;t like that, but the fact is, it helps to verify someone%26#039;s identity, especially if they have gained/lost weight, changed hair styles or just don%26#039;t look like their ID picture.
It is also very helpful if someone doesn%26#039;t have a driver%26#039;s license on them. Most people don%26#039;t know their DL number and it helps identify them.
Our department policy is that when we read an social security number over the area, we can not give the name associated with it nor can the dispatcher. So those are most often done over the phone. Personally I would like a better solution, but I do not make driver%26#039;s license policies on the state or national level.

You are not required to give your social security number. You must provide identification (i.e. a drivers license) but can politely tell the officer you don%26#039;t want to give that number or may simply say you can%26#039;t remember it.
We do not run credit checks. Except on applicants as part of their background investigation.
